Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa Wins 2014 Director’s Recycling Award from City of San Diego
San Diego, California (April 2014) – The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa has been selected as a 2014 Director’s Recycling Award winner from the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department. The award recognizes the resort’s successful and innovative programs resulting in significant waste reduction, recycling, and economic benefits.
“‘Going green’ isn’t just a cliché term to throw around,” said Dario Jones, The Catamaran’s Green Committee Representative. “We take our recycling efforts seriously and we leave no stone unturned when looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. We are honored to be a first-time winner of this award and we pledge to continue our efforts.”
The Catamaran’s recycling and conservation savings per quarter include 122,091 kW-hrs of electricity (enough to power 10 homes for a full year), 1,716 gallons of oil (enough energy to heat and cool eight homes for a full year), 119,357 gallons of water (enough to meet the fresh water needs of 2,121 people for a quarter), and 116 cubic yards of landfill airspace (enough airspace to meet the disposal needs of a community of 595 people).
The Catamaran is a participant of the California Green Lodging Program, which helps to provide travelers a green option for their lodging needs. The Catamaran earned the program’s Environmentalist Level accolade in 2012 for demonstrating water and energy conservation, waste minimization, recycling, environmentally friendly purchasing, program sustainability, and pollution prevention. The Environmentalist Level is the top tier among the program’s award categories, which are given out every three years.
The Catamaran in 2013 received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, an accolade that honors hospitality excellence and is given to only the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on the travel web site.
